According to Chinese mythology, the Dragon King, also known as Ao Guang, was the sovereign of the 9 Seas. These being the Arctic, Antarctic, North and South Pacific, North and South Atlantic, South China Sea, Mediterranean Sea as well as the Indian Ocean. Each of his 9 Dragon sons were placed in charge of these 9 big bodies of Water, with each possessing unique characteristics and abilities.
Collectively, these 9 Dragon sons are said to bring the gifts of music (qiúniú 囚牛), competitive spirit (yázì 睚眦 ), bravery (cháofēng 嘲風), strength of character (púláo 蒲牢), filial piety (suānní 狻猊), protection against challenges and obstacles (bìxì 贔屭), protection against litigation (bì'àn 狴犴), protection against natural disasters (bāxià 霸下), and protection against evil spirits (chīwěn 蚩吻).
